Sometimes, I find myself telling a writing student that they ‘have given their idea’ away, by which I mean that the idea for a story is a really good one but that it has been wasted.…

I think good writing is good writing because it triggers responses in its readers. Readers say ‘I have been in that situation', ‘I know someone like that’ or ‘what a terrible thing to be faced with, how would I react?'’ etc etc.
If readers feel like that, it means that they are being drawn into the story. They stand next to your characters, they fear for what is about to happen, they simply must know what is on the next page.
If a reader does not really care what is happening…

As I have mentioned in a previous blog, I have just started work on a new DCI Jack Harris crime novel and, yet again, the process has focused my thoughts on beginnings.

I have had a few reviews from readers on Amazon lately that praise the way my characters feel like they are real people. I am greatly gratified by such comments. It’s what all writers seek to achieve.
I guess those readers can make such comments because, although they are fictional, my characters are also real people, comprising bits taken from people I know. A wisp of hair here, a jacket there, a prejudice from someone else.

How do I get over the problem? Simple. I close my eyes and imagine myself there with my characters. What can they see, what can they hear,…

I have written before about reviews. As I said last time, if a review has useful points to make I always take them away with me, think them over and address them in my writing if I feel it is necessary.
However, they can sometime…
