Revealing something of themselves in their writing is something of which many writers are wary, preferring to produce work in which their personality is obscured.

However, for many other writers, there cannot be fiction without a sense of themselves in it. For some authors, me included, there is always part of them peering through.

In my case, very personal themes can be glimpsed through my main characters such as John Blizzard and his concern about ageing (it has come to my attention that I am not getting any younger and my father’s battle against dementia inspired The Secrets Man (The Book Folks), something I have written about in a previous blog).

Also, I am there when I write about Jack Harris and his love of the remote life (I live on a Scottish hillside) and his passion for wildlife (much of my journalistic career has been spent writing about flora and fauna).

It may not be obvious but look hard enough and I’m there!

Knowing when to cast all caution to the wind

Writing is an art form which combines two skills which appear, at first glance, to have nothing on common – unrestrained creativity and well-controlled discipline. However, good writing is not possible without either of them. To explain, as I write the latest DCI Jack Harris crime novel, I am being disciplined and following the synopsis that I developed right from the…See More
