The idea of ‘the tears of a clown’ is an intriguing theme for an author and one which Kay Wilson exploits commendably in her new novel The Stand-up Mam.
The central character, Georgie Chancellor, has worked hard to have a perfect life. She has a beautiful home, successful husband and two wonderful children. Everything she dreamed about as a girl is hers, or so she thinks, until she is encouraged by her family to enter a stand-up comedy competition.
What begins as a mild interest soon becomes an obsession and the more she learns about the craft, the more she finds herself using dark truths from her own life to get laughs. Forced to endure elements of her past that she would rather not confront and finding herself coping with uncomfortable thoughts which threaten the very fabric of her family life, she finds that the stage is the only place she feels at home.
This book is many things but humorous it isn’t. Many comedians hide their tears behind their wise-cracking persona on stage and Kay Wilson’s capacity for storytelling beautifully captures the way Georgie’s life unravels the more successful she becomes as a performer. A compelling piece of writing and much to be recommended.
