Book Review - Murder in the New Forest by Carol Cole (The Book Folks).
It’s always a moment laden with anticipation when a new crime series emerges onto the scene and Carol Cole does not disappoint with Murder in the New Forest (The Book Folks).
At the heart of the novel is a new central character, DI Callum MacLean, newly arrived in Hampshire from Glasgow and plunged into a murder investigation in the equestrian world.
He is backed up by keen horse-rider DS Daisy Donaldson, which is a nice twist and gives the author plenty of scope as she develops a story that starts with the murder of a seemingly well-liked businesswoman, married to a respected local artist, and part of the close-knit community.
What adds to the story very effectively is the fact that MacLean is having to cope with the stark differences between his past experience of policing a tough city which jars with his somewhat more tranquil new surroundings.
It’s a good set-up and a good plot and helping to make it work is the author’s eye for detail which translates itself into an ability to create extremely visual scenes that stay long in the memory. I’m a fan!
