Sometimes in life there come milestones which are worthy of comment and the publication of the latest DCI Jack Harris book Kill Shot (The Book Folks) feels like one such event because it is my twentieth crime novel to make it into print.
The story plunges the detective chief inspector into a scenario where what appears to be a local murder not only challenges his view of an old friendship but also turns out to have national and international ramifications.
When a pair of hen harriers produce young on the grouse moors of the northern Pennines, Harris is as eager as most to protect the rare birds. When a birdwatcher on a vigil is shot dead, the locals are up in arms and the local landowner is the target of their suspicion.
With the community divided, Jack Harris must tread a fine line investigating the murder. As he delves into the cloudy affairs of the victim, he realises much more is at stake.
